Do you have experience in health sciences with a microbiology-oriented veterinary background, passionate about bioinformatics and understanding interactions, evolution, and adaptation of microorganisms in relation to antimicrobial resistance and One Health?
About the Department for Bacteria, Parasites and Fungi We are currently looking for one bioinformatician with a focus on microbial genomic analyses in relation to our task of microbial surveillance and research in public health. The position will include work related to surveillance of pathogens affecting production animals, the environment, and humans.
This position is located in the Bioinformatics and Microbial Genomics group as part of the Department for Bacteria, Parasites and Fungi of Statens Serum Institut. The department's purpose includes monitoring of bacterial infections, monitoring of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and providing specialized diagnostic testing and includes multiple specialties: bioinformaticians, data scientists, software developers, epidemiologists, microbiologists, and molecular biologists.
The position
You will primarily be involved in developing and applying methodologies to support research projects and our routine surveillance tasks related to animal and human health, in particular with the poultry industry. The main tasks will be to participate, lead, and publish studies on the bioinformatic side and coordinate with stakeholders that include data scientists, epidemiologists, food-production sector, doctors, and IT experts both inside and outside SSI.
Your responsibilities will include supporting others in the department with bioinformatic expertise, handling technical issues, initiating research projects, and advancing our portfolio of bioinformatic expertise in general.
Your education, experience and qualifications You have a Ph.D. degree in Veterinary Microbiology or related field and have experience working with bioinformatics. Experience working in the field (surveillance and pathology), as well as wet lab analyses, is a plus.
Qualifications:
- You have a publication record related to One Health microbial genomics
- You have experience developing in R
- You are passionate about good software practices, including software testing
- Bioinformatics pipeline experience
- Familiarity with WGS (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore)
- You are good at identifying issues and proposing solutions and enjoy learning new skills as part of your job
- Strong communication skills
- Language: written and oral English, knowledge of Danish is a plus.

Terms of employment
The employment will be in accordance with the terms of the current agreement between the Danish Ministry of Tax and Organization of Academics.
The position is part-time (2 days a week).
